Artist Statement: The island of Cuba has a fascinating history of intrigue, criminal government, and controversial existence. The people are resilient, clever and talented. On each visit, I find one woman who embodies this jumble of pride and frustration. My entry this year is a woman of Baracoa, the far eastern region, where Christopher Columbus landed. Her toothless smile and enthusiastic poster embody the contradictions of Cuba.
