Kristie Mooney - Morning Catch

Watercolor on Rice Paper - Batik painting by Kristie Mooney.

Artist statement: When creating a Batik on rice paper I combine water colors and watch them mingle through the fibers of the rice paper. The wax is applied in layers and once I achieve the intensity of the color I’m looking for
The entire painting is covered in wax. Next I carefully crinkle the wax and rice paper and run dark concentrated colors through the cracks. Every piece is unique.

This piece was created from memories of a recent trip to South Carolina. My husband and I were driving past Foley Beach when I saw the crew men harvesting and cleaning their early catch from the fishing boat on to the docks. The sun blasted bright on their orange overalls in the morning light. I had to jump out of the car and catch the moment.
