Artist Statement: "The Poet is a Funnel" is a portrait of Grace Cavalieri, Poet Laureate of Maryland. It was originally created as part of "The Creator and The Muse" project with Poets Artists. The title refers to a quotation from Grace about her process of gathering experiences and impressions from the world to create poetry. In the painting, the leaves represent this source of inspiration as observed by the poet. The imagery was layered together and the unique textures created with sections of masking fluid applied with a rough brush.
