Simplified and loose painting is my preferred way to lay the watercolor on paper directly. I always try to use less layers of wash if it is possible, even when the darkest color is applied. This is the way to keep the painting looked fresh and less labored. Of course, it requires better planning, decisive brush using and correctly understanding the relationships of cold vs warm and light vs dark. I usually paint the scenes related to our daily activity which makes it natural to include some human figures around.
